The Chequamegon is named for its unique design. Some say it reminds them of snake skin, some say it gives off heavy metal vibes, but the Chequamegon was named for its resemblance of a mountain bike tire tread.
The word itself comes from the Ojibwa language and means "place of shallow water" because of a bay on Lake Superior. What is now the Chequamegon national forest is right near our childhood home and contains many special memories.
If you know us personally, you know that mountain biking has been a huge part of our lives. There is a mountain bike festival that races across the Chequamegon land and has been a major family event of ours since I can remember. Many people grew up knowing and loving "The Fat Man" referring to Santa. We grew up with with that same fond memory of the term. But in our case it was in reference to the man in charge of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival - hence "The Fat Man".
